Rochdale Hornets’ Elijah Simpson Buzzes into Local Beekeeping with Boro Bees

Rochdale Hornets’ forward Elijah Simpson traded tackles for honeycombs this week as he joined volunteers at Boro Bees, a flourishing community beekeeping project based in Littleborough.

Founded by local businessman Mark Harris of AAA Pest Control Services Ltd and his partner Sharon Alfrey, Boro Bees is dedicated to reconnecting residents with nature through the fascinating world of honey bees. The initiative invites people of all ages to learn about the crucial role bees play in our ecosystem, while enjoying the serene surroundings of the Littleborough hills.

Simpson, who hails from Australia and made a strong debut for the Hornets with a try and Man of the Match title, took a break from his rigorous training schedule to don a bee suit and explore the buzzing site. His visit included hands-on learning about beekeeping practices and discussions with the team working to build a sustainable and educational hub.

“It’s such a peaceful place, and it’s amazing to see what’s being done here,” said Simpson. “I didn’t know much about beekeeping before today, but now I’ve got a whole new appreciation for the work that goes into it and how important bees are for the environment.”

Boro Bees is planning a series of open days where experienced beekeepers and environmental experts will lead interactive sessions. The aim is not only to educate but also to foster community spirit and promote outdoor wellbeing.

Adding a sweet twist, the initiative will also sell surplus honey produced by the bees, with all proceeds going to local charities selected annually. Community support for the project is growing, fuelled further by Simpson’s visit.

“Elijah’s visit has given us a real boost,” said co-founder Mark Harris. “He was genuinely interested, asked great questions, and really understood what we’re trying to build here. Having a local sports figure and club support us means a lot.”

Simpson, now an advocate for beekeeping, hinted at a new off-season interest: “It’s definitely different from tackling drills, but I’d love to come back and help again.”
