Local markets buzz with beekeeping demos & eco-friendly fun at Earth Day celebration
Keep Florence Beautiful and their partners held an “Earth Day Takeover” event on Saturday.
Several markets and farm-to-school vendors were at the Florence city center market, along with sustainability and educational activities.
Under a couple of tents were beehives, there to educate people on beekeeping.
Crafty Maibritt is a business in Lake City operated by Maibritt Philipp and her husband. They sell raw and natural herbs, products and bee honey.
Their bees produce honey for all of their honey-based products they sell.
Phillipp showcased one of their hives today at the farmers market and says kids are the most excited to learn.
“They’re very excited, especially the little ones and just to look and see, and some of them crawling themselves out and hatching so this is very interesting," Philipp said.
ABC 15 also talked with Pee Dee Beekeepers Association, which was out to educate any first timers who plan on starting their beekeeping journey.
David Yannello said it’s better to start sooner rather than later.
“Spring is the best time to start the bees," Yannello said. "The bees spend all summer and spring building up the hive and packing away honey so that they can live through the winter."
Along with Earth Day, education beautification projects were happening around the city.
Jessica Harrington is a Keep Florence Beautiful volunteer, who said city clean-up can go a long way.
“New businesses come in, they see the litter, it’s not great," Harrington said. "We want our community to grow and thrive, so we need to keep it clean.”
Harrington says there will be a native tree giveaway happening Tuesday evening on Earth Day.
