Honeybee populations declining across the nation
MAYWOOD, Mo. (WGEM) - Honeybee colony populations have been on the decline across the country in recent years.
Within the Mississippi Valley Beekeepers Association, between 10-50% of bee colonies have been lost this past year.
Commercial beekeepers across the country have seen bee colony losses between 60-80%.
Researchers have stated that it is a possibility of changing their habitats due to changing weather patterns, but the concrete answer remains unclear.
”Well, it will affect our food crop if we don’t have the bees. They pollinate about 75% of our crops, which are your nut trees, fruit trees, and vegetables,” said Tom Stark, president of the Mississippi Valley Beekeepers Association. “Which is about $15 billion worth of crops.”
He also added that this will affect the prices of locally sourced produce and honey products, and make it harder to produce honey based products.
Almond trees produce about 2,000 pounds of almonds per acre, but without bee pollination, those same trees would only produce about 200 pounds of almonds per acre.
If you want to learn more about bees, how to keep them and their importance, the association meets at 7 p.m. on the last Tuesday of each month at the Adams County Farm Bureau building.
