Dobrudja is left without spring honey
There will be no spring honey in Dobrudja, due to the high winter mortality of bees and the freezing of fruit trees and rapeseed. Against the background of this gloomy picture, a new crisis is looming for the beekeeping sector: the high tariffs imposed by the American government will redirect Vietnamese and Mexican honey to the European market, and in particular to the Bulgarian one. And it has been on the verge of survival for years due to dumped imports from China, reports Nova TV.
The cold in April caused serious damage to beekeepers. Bee colonies are stagnant and there is a lack of nectar and, accordingly, honey.
"There are completely destroyed apiaries and I believe that the state should intervene to help people by restoring the number of farms", explained beekeeper Desislav Yanakiev.
The chairman of the association “Bee 1946 - Dobrich” Galin Georgiev explained that the current time is very critical for bee colonies. "All queens have reduced egg production. From there, the age composition in the hives is disrupted. The first pastures will certainly be missed, there will even be a need for supplementary feeding on our part," he noted.
Beekeeper Polina Mihova believes that another difficult season is coming. "The industry is truly coming to an end, unfortunately! Beekeeping is something that is becoming increasingly difficult and there is no support from anywhere, so in reality the people who are involved in it are absolute enthusiasts", she emphasized.
The forecast for honey in general is equally pessimistic. Against the backdrop of natural disasters, the United States has issued a global challenge by imposing high tariffs. The EU is expected to be flooded with imports from Vietnam and Mexico.
"We are all outraged by what Trump is doing, but if European politicians were at least a little like him, to protect the interests of Europe, perhaps we would not be in this situation. "We currently have an enormous amount of honey that has not been sold at the expense of imports from China and Ukraine," explained Polina.
Galin called on the authorities to impose duties or completely stop imports until beekeepers manage to sell their quantities.
The wholesale purchase price in our country remains 4 leva per kilogram, while in the largest consumer of honey in Europe - Germany, it is many times higher.
Beekeeper Krasimir Kostadinov says that when the purchase price is below the cost price of a given product, this inevitably leads to the liquidation of the particular industry.
The main reason is the dumping import, which has existed in our country for years. In Poland, there are already concrete actions - the import of Chinese honey labeled as Ukrainian has been stopped.
– invert sugar or the so-called industrial honey comes from China. It passes through Russia to Ukraine, because they may be at war, but they also trade. Ukraine trades with the EU duty-free and this is actually a duty-free route," Krasimir further explained.
In order to stop it, an anti-dumping law is needed, beekeepers are categorical.
The Advisory Council on Beekeeping will meet on April 16. The demands of honey producers boil down to one thing - to protect their production.
