Dengue fever is no longer a recurring disease
Dengue fever is no longer a disease that "recurs" during the rainy season. Dengue fever now appears all year round, not limited to regions, becoming a constant threat to public health.
Dr. Nguyen Huy Luan, Head of the Vaccination Unit, University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, shared: " Dengue fever is spreading both in time and geography, not only in the South, the disease is spreading in the Central Highlands and the North with hot spots being Hai Phong and Hanoi. Abnormal climate changes, unseasonal rains and prolonged abnormally high temperatures have expanded breeding conditions for disease-transmitting mosquitoes. In addition, rapid urbanization, the storage of domestic water and crowded residential areas also create an ideal environment for Aedes mosquitoes to develop. In particular, strong trade development between regions makes it easy for mosquitoes to "follow" people moving across the country, increasing the risk of outbreaks even in places where cases were rarely recorded before."
Not only is there a change in epidemiology, dengue fever also poses many potential health risks if not diagnosed and treated promptly. "We have recorded patients being hospitalized very early in the year, no longer following the old cycle of the middle and end of the rainy season as before. The number of complications has increased due to late hospitalization, many patients are hospitalized in serious condition due to being subjective with the initial symptoms. Dengue fever does not have typical symptoms, is easily confused with flu, viral fever and can cause dangerous complications such as dengue shock, plasma leakage, multiple organ failure if not closely monitored," said specialist doctor 1 Nguyen Thanh Luan, Deputy Head of the Department of Infectious Resuscitation, Children's Hospital 2, Ho Chi Minh City.
Unlike other infectious diseases, dengue fever can be reinfected up to 4 times in a lifetime due to the existence of 4 different types of viruses (DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3 and DENV-4). The first infection does not mean immunity, and the risk of severe progression when reinfected is even very high. In particular, all subjects, from children, adults, to pregnant women, are at risk of serious complications.
Proactive prevention of dengue fever
Dr. Nguyen Huy Luan affirmed: "To effectively control dengue fever, a comprehensive prevention strategy is needed, combining many solutions. In particular, traditional methods such as killing mosquitoes, killing larvae/wrigglers, eliminating mosquito breeding sites and avoiding mosquito bites still need to be maintained regularly and synchronously. However, these methods alone are not enough. Vaccination is a new solution integrated into existing prevention and control strategies, not only helping individuals prevent disease but also contributing to creating community immunity - a key factor in sustainable disease control".
Epidemiology changes, mosquito-transmitting habits change, so the way we prevent disease also needs to change. Taking proactive measures today, raising vigilance, from awareness of killing mosquitoes every day, monitoring early signs of disease, to accessing vaccination solutions is the most practical and urgent way for each person to protect themselves, their families and the community.
Vodcast "Dengue fever is no longer seasonal - Take the initiative to prevent it today" is produced by Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital. Led by Master Do Thi Nam Phuong, Head of the Communication Center, and specialized doctors: Doctor - Doctor Nguyen Huy Luan, Head of the Vaccination Unit of Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital; Specialist Doctor 1 Vo Thanh Luan, Deputy Head of the Department of Infectious Resuscitation, Children's Hospital 2.
