Climate-neutral Gotland 2030

Sustainable development has long been a focus on Gotland, and in 2021 the regional development strategy was adopted in broad collaboration with local development actors. The vision is a creative island with space for all of life, and one of the overall goals to achieve this is for Gotland to be a role model in the energy and climate transition. Region Gotland, together with a strong consortium representing academia, business and civil society, is now working to gather forces, collaborate and conduct joint efforts to take the next step in the climate and energy transition and drive the development of sustainable and climate-neutral cities.
Gotland is Sweden's only island region, the smallest region and the only municipality in Sweden whose government is both municipal and regional in the same organization. This means that the organization has both the regional development responsibility, as well as the municipal implementation capacity.
Gotland's island location is unique to Sweden. Gotland has its own specific context in terms of history, geography, natural and cultural values, as well as in terms of public governance and the conditions for urban planning and development. Gotland is a rural region, with Visby as its only town, but there are close links through part-year residents, commuting and business establishments to the urban context of the metropolitan region. This means that the urban concept is challenged and developed in the Gotland context.
