2025 Ridge Beekeepers Beekeeping Seminar April 25

The Ridge Beekeepers Association invites you to participate in the 2025 Ridge Beekeepers Beekeeping Seminar on April 26 from 8 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. at the UF/IFAS Polk Extension Service at 1702 S. Holland Pkwy, Bartow, FL 33830.

This is a family event where you can learn everything about the Western Honey Bee.

The Western Honey Bee is responsible for pollinating approximately 85% of all of the crops we eat today. Join us and learn important topics beekeepers should know to be able to keep bees in Florida.

The seminar is composed of 10 stations where participants will rotate every 25 min to learn a different topic of beekeeping. Topics will include:

Looking inside the hive/Honey Bee Biology.
Pest and diseases of Honey Bees.
Queen Bees management.
Nectar sources for Honey Bees.
Starting a Hive.
Beekeeping Tools.
Honey Extraction.
Wax Rendering.
Honey Bee Transport.
Hive Construction.

Non-contact exposure to dinotefuran disrupts honey bee homing by altering MagR and Cry2 gene expression Dinotefuran is known to negatively affect honeybee ( Apis mellifera ) behavior, but the underlying mechanism remains unclear. The magnetoreceptor ( MagR , which responds to magnetic fields) and cryptochrome ( Cry2 , which is sensitive to light) genes are considered to play important roles in honey bees’ homing and localization behaviors. Our study found that dinotefuran, even without direct contact, can act like a magnet, significantly altering MagR expression in honeybees. This non-contact exposure reduced the bees’ homing rate. Bee attack claims life of newspaper distributor Newspaper distributor Pushparaja Shetty (45), who sustained severe injuries in a bee attack, succumbed to his injuries on Thursday at a hospital in Mangaluru. Pushparaja was attacked by a swarm of bees on Wednesday morning while walking at Kenjaru Taangadi under Bajpe town panchayat limits. He was immediately admitted to a hospital for treatment but could not survive the ordeal. Fondly known as ‘Boggu’ in the Porkodi area, Pushparaja was well-known for his dedication to delivering newspapers on foot to every household. Ron and Diane Caraway are reminded of that each day on the homestead, Boggy Branch Farms, that’s been in their family for three generations.
