Weston Back Yard Beekeepers To Host Cornell Professor
The Back Yard Beekeepers Association (BYBA) will host Dr. Scott McArt, an associate professor of pollinator health at Cornell University, for an in-person discussion on neonicotinoid insecticides. The event will take place on March 25 at Norfield Congregational Church, 64 Norfield Road in Weston, Connecticut.
Attendees are invited to arrive at 7 p.m. for networking and conversation, with Dr. McArt’s presentation beginning at 7:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public, though registration is encouraged at backyardbeekeepers.com. A virtual attendance option will not be available.
Dr. McArt will discuss the role of neonicotinoid insecticides in agriculture, their risks to pollinators, and the policy implications of recent scientific findings. His work contributed to a 2020 report analyzing the risks and benefits of neonicotinoid use in New York State, which helped inform the 2024 Birds & Bees Protection Act. The legislation became the first in the United States to ban neonicotinoid treatments on corn, soybean, and wheat seeds, as well as outdoor ornamental plants and turf. Dr. McArt will also address efforts to challenge the science behind these findings and the impact of public engagement on evidence-based policymaking.
For those unable to attend, BYBA members will have access to a recording of the presentation in the members-only section of the association’s website.
BYBA, one of the largest regional beekeeping organizations in the United States, has more than 400 members, ranging from novice to experienced beekeepers. The group aims to promote beekeeping and educate the public on the role of honey bees in the environment.
