Swarm Prevention To Be Discussed At March 17 Davy Crockett Beekeepers Meeting
The Davy Crockett Beekeepers Association will hold its monthly meeting on Monday, March 17, at Towering Oaks Baptist Church.
The church is located at 1985 Buckingham Road, in Greeneville.
A question-and-answer session for beginning beekeepers will be held at 6:30 p.m., followed by the regular meeting at 7 p.m., a DCBA news release says.
This month’s topic will be “Swarm Prevention,” featuring guest speaker David Sams, a state biologist with the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, the release notes.
A beekeeper for more than 14 years, Sams is the owner-operation at Twisted Bees Apiary, where he currently runs 75 hives. He additional service as vice president of the Clinch Valley Beekeepers Association and as a local bee inspector. He was also a co-planner of the 2025 TenneBEES Expo.
Sams says he enjoys trapping swarms and educating the public and fellow beekeepers about honeybees.
Anyone interested is invited to attend the meeting and hear more about honeybees, DCBA officials say.
“”You don’t need to be a beekeeper to attend, we welcome everyone whether you have bees, thinking about getting bees, or just want to learn more,” they added. “We look forward to seeing you there.”
There is no cost to attend.

• The queen bee lives for about 2-3 years. She is the busiest in the summer months, when the hive needs to be at its maximum strength, and lays up to 2500 eggs a day.
• The queen may mate with up to 17 drones over a 1-2 day period of mating.
• Worker honeybees live for about 4 weeks in the spring or summer but up to 6 months during the winter.
• A honeybee can fly for up to six miles, and as fast as 15 miles per hour.
