One day class for beginning beekeepers slated in Defiance
The Black Swamp Beekeepers Association is offering a one-day class on March 29 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Defiance County OSU Extension Office, 06879 Evansport Road.
There will be a half hour break for lunch.
New beekeepers will gain insight into what to expect in the first few years of beekeeping.
Information will be presented on these topics:
• the cost associated with buying equipment, bees and gear.
• building, hive bodies and frames.
• basic colony breakdown: types of bees, breeds.
• hives: learn about the parts of hives and their function.
• pests and disease: an overview.
• summer buildup, includes additional items and costs.
• equipment and gear for extracting honey.
• fall and winter preparedness.
• different methods of emergency feeding.
• questions and answer time from a panel of experienced beekeepers, mentors and newbees.
