Global climate anxiety outpaces local concern
A global survey on public trust reveals a sharp contrast between worldwide climate anxiety and local concern.
While 80% of people globally – and 75% of Greeks – express deep worry about climate change’s global impact, only 44% fear serious consequences for their own country. That number drops to 32% for local areas, with Greece at 29%.
The 2024 “Global Public Trust” survey, conducted across 21 countries, included Greece through Focus Bari, part of the IRIS network. Notably, Turkey reported the highest concern (96%).
Greeks remain among the most pessimistic, with 58% believing humanity has surpassed the point of no return. Women (70%) express more concern than men, and 62% see climate change as the greatest risk for future generations.
Despite broad support for renewables, only 36% of Greeks prioritize clean energy – far below Mexico and Kenya (over 80%). Globally, consumers prioritize safety and purity over sustainability in their purchases.
