From unemployment to agricultural entrepreneurship in Jordan
In a small Jordanian village where economic hardships limit opportunities, Omar faced an uncertain future after completing his studies. Despite his best efforts, financial independence remained out of reach. Yet, his deep-rooted passion for agriculture and beekeeping sparked a determination to carve his own path – one that would transform not only his life but also his community.
A humble beginning: Cultivating hope from barren land
Refusing to let unemployment define him, Omar took a bold step. With limited resources, he rented a barren piece of land from a relative, planting seasonal crops like thyme and sage. The work was strenuous, and the earnings were modest, but he remained steadfast, believing that perseverance would yield success.

A turning point: Support from the Employment-intensive Investment Programme
Everything changed when Omar got a call to ask him if he was interested in getting skills training or participating in an entrepreneurship programme as part of profiling efforts for the former beneficiaries of the Employment-Intensive Investment Programme (EIIP) as he had previously worked in this project that is implemented by the ILO and funded by the German government through KfW. Since his dream was to start a business, he chose to participate in the entrepreneurship programme to build his skills and achieve his dream. Seeing an opportunity to grow, he enrolled in specialized training, where he learned modern farming techniques, business management, and sustainable agricultural practices.
Upon completing the programme, Omar received a grant - a turning point that would fuel his dreams and elevate his ambitions.
Growth and success: Citrus farming and beekeeping
With newfound skills and financial support, Omar expanded his land, planting citrus trees that promised long-term income. But he didn’t stop there. Recognizing the potential of citrus blossoms in honey production, he invested in beekeeping, purchasing hives and launching a honey business.
Armed with business acumen gained through EIIP training, he successfully marketed his honey, transforming a small idea into a profitable and sustainable venture.
From job seeker to job creator
Omar’s determination paid off. His growing success allowed him to buy the land he once rented, turning it into a thriving farm. But his impact went beyond personal success as he created job opportunities for young people in his village, proving that agriculture can be a vehicle for economic empowerment and community development.
Looking ahead: A sustainable future
Today, Omar is more than an entrepreneur; he’s a symbol of resilience and innovation. With plans to expand his honey production and introduce new agricultural techniques, he continues to champion sustainable farming and job creation in his village.
Reflecting on his journey, Omar proudly states:
"At first, I was looking for a job. Now, I’m creating jobs for others. What started as a simple dream has grown into a reality beyond anything I imagined."
Omar’s story is a powerful testament to the impact of green jobs, sustainable agriculture, and the transformative power of investing in people. Through EIIP’s support, he has not only changed his own life but has also sown the seeds of prosperity for his entire community.
