Almost 70% of bees in our country have died after the winter
The winter mortality rate among bees in the country reaches 70%. This is what the chairman of the Beekeepers Association - Ruse, Ivan Kanev, is alarming about. According to him, at the regional level, the mortality rate is about 50 percent. In early April, a meeting will be held in Ruse with a lecturer from the Agricultural University to clarify the reasons for the bee die-off.
“The mortality problem is the most urgent, since the measures we will take will determine how the year will continue”, Kanev emphasizes, quoted by Nova TV. The damage is repaired by separating some of the bees to form new families or buying them, if possible.
Many people have given up beekeeping because it is not profitable. “The sector has been in a bad state for about 5 years. Contrary to economic logic, the price of production continues to fall, colleagues have stopped registering as farmers, even though they are producers, in order not to pay taxes and social security contributions”, shared Kanev. According to him, the situation in the sector, and in agriculture in general, may become even worse after the approval of the agreement between the EU and the Mercosur countries. The concerns come mainly from the potential impact of the deal on agricultural producers, due to the import of cheap products from third countries.
