Support for beekeeping is increasing

The Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Development, Memli Krasniqi and the Deputy Minister Vezir Januzi hosted the representatives of the League of Beekeepers of Kosovo in a meeting today. During this meeting, they were informed about the support programs of the MAFRD for 2016.

Minister Krasniqi indicated that this year they have eased the criteria in both programs and he also said that they have increased support for beekeepers through direct payments, where from 10 euros in previous years, this year it has become 15 euros per hive.

Also, the minister emphasized that beekeeping as a potential and important sector in Kosovo, with the continuous support of the ministry, has managed to develop, thus bringing about an increase in the production and quality of honey and its products.

On the other hand, the representatives of the League of Beekeepers, thanked the minister for the continuous support that the MAFRD has given to them and welcome the easements made in the criteria to benefit from the programs of this ministry. They informed that the support of the ministry has been extended throughout Kosovo and every year the number of beekeepers who have been supported has increased.

In 2012, according to them, about 470 beekeepers with a number of over 45 thousand bees were supported through subsidies, while in 2015 the number of supported beekeepers is over 1800, with a number of bee families of about 110 thousand.

In this meeting, it was also discussed about the initiation of the membership process of the League of Beekeepers of Kosovo in the International Federation of Beekeepers' Associations "Apimondia". The Ministry will provide financial and professional support for membership this year.
