200 farmers take part in beekeeping seminar
Nearly 200 farmers from across the state took part in a seminar on beekeeping at the Agricultural College and Research Institute (AC & RI) in Madurai on Monday.
The two-day seminar, funded by National Bee Board in New Delhi, aims at educating farmers about various bee species and the importance of beekeeping. They will be trained in honey extraction and the creation of value-added products from honey.
They will also learn about the role of beekeeping in horticulture and agriculture, crop production, and the marketing of honey and its by-products. The farmers will also be taught about the pesticide poisoning of honeybee colonies and how to protect the honeybees from the indiscriminate use of pesticides in agricultural fields.
The seminar was inaugurated by dean of AC & RI P P Mahendran. He highlighted how honeybee farming can be done with minimal land and urged farmers to utilise the expertise of entomologists and experts in the institute. Joint director of agriculture Subburaj was present.
Leading entrepreneurs in the beekeeping from across the state participated and exhibited their products such as honey varieties, hives, bee veils, extractors, and various value-added products prepared from honey and beeswax.
