Pet Ownership: Economic Burden and Environmental Considerations in the Age of Petconomy

Pet Ownership: Economic Burden and Environmental Considerations in the Age of Petconomy The Economic Reality of Pet Ownership In recent years, the pet population has been rapidly increasing, giving rise to a new economic sector known as "petconomy." According to the 2023 Korean Pet Industry Report, approximately 5.52 million households in South Korea currently own pets, and the pet-related market size is estimated to be 7 trillion KRW, with projections that it will exceed 15 trillion KRW by 2030. This shift indicates that pet ownership is no longer just about keeping animals but has evolved into a new consumer culture. The Growth of Petconomy and Its Economic Impact The term "petconomy" refers to all economic activities related to pets, encompassing a wide range of industries. As expenditures on improving the quality of life for pets have increased, the petconomy has seen explosive growth in recent years. The aforementioned 2023 report highlights that the domestic p...

Honey, honey, how you keep bees…

Honey, honey, how you keep bees… In almost every conversation I’ve had about beekeeping, I’ve received the same response – one which is both eager and inclusive of TikTok’s ‘Texas Beeworks’. Clearly, there exists a kind of curiosity concerning honeybees. For this reason, I’ve taken it upon myself to try and translate this enthusiasm from screens to general routines. So, whether you seek to celebrate or save the bees, this article should offer you greater clarity. I’ve spoken to three beekeepers – Sofia Dartnell, Nynke Blömer, and Theo Von Wilmowski – each president of their college beekeeping society, to learn about the benefits of beekeeping and how honeybee enthusiasts might get involved. As a member of St. John’s Beekeeping Society, it’ll come as no surprise that I too will attest to their brilliance! St. John’s, Darwin, and King’s are the first colleges to keep bees. They are kept on college grounds, where gardens provide them with plenty of forage. Apiarists and gardeners are not...

Campeche beekeepers achieve legal protection for bees

Campeche beekeepers achieve legal protection for bees In a historic ruling that marks a precedent in the defense of the rights of nature, the Fourth District Judge of the Auxiliary Center of the Fifth Region granted protection in favor of representatives of the Mayan peoples. The ruling recognizes the ecological and cultural value of bees. It condemns the omissions of federal and state authorities that have allowed their massive death due to the indiscriminate use of agrochemicals and deforestation. After 15 years of struggle, a historic resolution was achieved that recognized bees as subjects of law, a step that underlined their economic, ecosystem, and cultural importance. Lawyer Jorge Fernández Mendiburu highlighted that these pollinators are essential for environmental balance and that their protection also implies safeguarding the ancestral beekeeping practices of the Mayan communities. This recognition will allow Mayan communities to demand effective measures to protect bee...

Beekeeping canines have taken social media by storm after an Instagram post from @treecard celebrated National Urban Beekeeping Day last week shared snaps of dogs kitted out in their beekeeper suits, looking completely precious. With their exceptionally keen noses, dogs have been invaluable in detecting illegal substances and even identifying certain types of cancer in humans thanks to their ability to notice specific smells. This remarkable olfactory skill is also what allows them to assist in the world of beekeeping. Beekeeping dogs are...

Spain introduces paid climate leave after deadly floods Spain ’s leftwing government has approved “paid climate leave” of up to four days to allow workers to avoid travelling during weather emergencies, a month after floods killed at least 224 people . Several companies came under fire after the 29 October catastrophe for ordering employees to keep working despite a red alert issued by the national weather agency. The firms said the authorities failed to inform them sufficiently and sent telephone alerts too late during the European country’s deadliest floods in decades. The new measure aims to “regulate in accordance with the climate emergency” so that “no worker must run risks”, labour minister Yolanda Díaz told public broadcaster RTVE. If emergency authorities raise the alarm about a risk, “the worker must refrain from going to work”, said Díaz. Employees can resort to a reduced working day beyond the four-day period, a mechanism that already exists for emergencies, the government ...

Disappointed by this year's climate talks, Indigenous advocates look to Brazil in 2025 Some Indigenous advocates at this year's international climate negotiations in Baku, Azerbaijan say the deals made fall short of what's needed to stave off the worst impacts of a warming planet, from sea level rise to catastrophic storms. COP29 ended with wealthy countries agreeing to help poorer nations  with at least $300 billion annually to address global warming in a last-minute deal. Advocates are now looking to next year's climate talks in Brazil, which some are calling the "Indigenous peoples" COP, to push for further inclusion in climate negotiations and support the global Indigenous movement. This year, a group within COP known as the  Local Communities and Indigenous Peoples Platform  came to Baku with a set of priorities, which included advocating for a formal seat at the negotiating table for climate initiatives. They also wanted more Indigenous knowledge incor...
