Understanding Patellar Luxation and Limping in Small Dogs: Causes, Symptoms, and Prevention

Understanding Patellar Luxation and Limping in Small Dogs: Causes, Symptoms, and Prevention Small dogs make up about 70% of the pet population in the United States, and one of the most common orthopedic conditions affecting these tiny breeds is patellar luxation . This condition, primarily caused by genetics, occurs when the kneecap moves out of its normal position, affecting the function of the knee joint. The knee structure in small dogs tends to be weaker than in larger breeds, making them more susceptible to this issue. Patellar luxation is characterized by symptoms such as limping, reluctance to use the affected leg, and pain, which may cause the dog to grunt or whimper. Besides genetic factors, other causes include slippery surfaces, excessive weight, lack of exercise, and trauma. While surgery is a common treatment, it is not always straightforward, especially in severe cases that require corrective osteotomy, a sophisticated surgical procedure. Causes of Limping in Small...

The Importance of Regular Veterinary Checkups for Pets: Early Detection and Prevention

The Importance of Regular Veterinary Checkups for Pets: Early Detection and Prevention Just like humans, pets require regular health checkups to ensure their well-being and detect potential diseases early. However, the need for these checkups is even more critical for pets due to their accelerated aging process. For dogs and cats, one year is equivalent to about seven human years, which means their bodies change rapidly, and diseases progress faster. Unlike humans, pets cannot express where or how they feel pain, making early detection challenging. Dr. Lim Se-pyeong, director of the Daegu Main Animal Health Checkup Center, emphasizes the significance of regular health checkups. By tracking various organ levels yearly, veterinarians can identify changes in your pet's health and detect diseases earlier, potentially improving treatment outcomes. Wellness Exams: Tailored to Age and Breed The frequency and scope of pet wellness exams depend on the animal's age, breed, living envir...

Debate on Pet Ownership Tax in South Korea: Accountability vs. Public Resistance

Debate on Pet Ownership Tax in South Korea: Accountability vs. Public Resistance In recent months, the potential introduction of a pet ownership tax has sparked debate in South Korea, following media reports on the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, Forestry and Rural Affairs (MOLFA)'s development of the Third Comprehensive Plan for Animal Welfare (2025-2029). While the ministry has stated that it is not actively considering the tax at this time, it has acknowledged that such measures exist in countries like Germany and could be explored as a long-term policy option. This is not the first time the topic has been raised. Four years ago, during the release of the Second Comprehensive Plan for Animal Welfare, discussions on imposing a pet ownership tax or levy led to a similar public reaction. Proponents argue that such a tax could increase responsibility among pet owners and secure much-needed funding, while opponents worry it could lead to more abandoned animals, as the financial burd...

Pet Food Industry Growth in South Korea

Pet Food Industry Growth in South Korea In an era where the birthrate is declining, and populations are aging, the number of households adopting pets is significantly increasing in South Korea. The growing pet population is not just a cultural shift; it represents a burgeoning industry, particularly in the pet food sector. As environmentalists and concerned citizens, it is essential to examine this growth through both economic and ecological lenses. Expanding Pet Food Market: A Booming Industry According to the Korea Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Distribution Corporation, the domestic pet food market was valued at approximately KRW 1.76 trillion in 2022. This figure is expected to rise to KRW 2.49 trillion by 2028, with an average annual growth rate of 6.0%. Such rapid expansion signifies the increasing importance of pets in South Korean households. However, with growth comes the challenge of sustainability, particularly in terms of sourcing and production practices within the ...

Importance of COP29 cannot be underestimated - UN Climate Executive Secretary

Importance of COP29 cannot be underestimated - UN Climate Executive Secretary BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 30.  The importance of the upcoming COP29 cannot be underestimated, the Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention Simon Stiell said at the international conference within the framework of the Baku Climate Action Week (BCAW 2024),  Trend  reports. "The urgency and importance of the upcoming COP29 cannot be underestimated. To grasp the importance of this event, just look at the headlines in recent news about record temperatures, abnormal heat, and floods. As confirmed by the World Meteorological Organization, 2023 has been the hottest on record, with particularly shocking temperature fluctuations in the ocean. Extreme weather events and wildfires are no longer part of future forecasts; for far too many of us, they have become a reality," he said. Stiell noted that Climate Action Week serves as a springboard to shine a spotlight on the city of Baku and it...

Veterans harvest honey with beekeeping organization

Veterans harvest honey with beekeeping organization Last year, South Dakota produced 18.4 million pounds of honey and was  ranked the second state for honey production . Hives for Heroes was responsible for 110 of those pounds. The non-profit organization got to work on Saturday to harvest honey for the year with hopes of improving numbers from last year. Unfortunately, with such a hot summer in the Black Hills area it was unlikely numbers would be matched. “This year we had queen problems in the spring, and we didn’t have any brood buildup and then again it’s back to the heat, no nectar flow, they brought in some pollen but we just did not get the build-up of the brood that we should have this year. It’s not just a local thing right here at the bee yard. It’s all over. It just was a terrible year for bees,” said Slim Buckley of Rapid City’s Parks Division. Buckley has his hives at home and said the problems occurred at his hives as well as the hives of others he knows. This is the...

COVID-19 Lockdowns Impact Lunar Temperatures

COVID-19 Lockdowns Impact Lunar Temperatures A study has shown that COVID-19 lockdowns on Earth caused a dip in lunar temperatures during April-May 2020. Researchers found that night-time temperatures on the Moon fell by 8-10 degrees Celsius. This phenomenon suggests the Moon could serve as a stable platform for studying climate change on Earth. Astudy has revealed that the worldwide COVID-19 lockdowns led to an abnormal dip in lunar temperatures during April and May of 2020. Researchers found maximum temperatures on the Moon fell, with night-time temperatures dropping by 8-10 degrees Celsius, raising intriguing possibilities for lunar-based climate research. The reduction in human activity drastically cut greenhouse gas emissions, affecting the heat that reaches the Moon, highlighting the lockdowns' far-reaching impacts.

Invasive hornet a buzzkill for local beekeeping industry

Invasive hornet a buzzkill for local beekeeping industry Authorities captured a bee-napping in action.   It’s a sticky situation as the honey bees hold on but the hornet just won’t buzz off.  This little bee was not so lucky.  It's been a literal buzzkill at this apiary in Ipan, Talofofo. “At one point, we had killed 25 hornets in less than an hour,” said Jen Nelson, Greenscape Owner and local beekeeper. “My husband is a horticulturalist and he got into beekeeping because he really just loves bees,” Nelson said.  These busy bees have a very important job pollinating crops and producing byproducts like honey but it's threatened by the greater banded hornet which was introduced to Guam in 2016.  “At first it wasn’t a problem. But last year and this year, it's really raised to a state of an emergency situation that if you’re not watching your hives, if you’re not an active beekeeper and staying on top of controlling the hornets, they will get into your ...

Weather: the MISTRAL wind arrives to chase away the ABNORMAL HEAT, temperatures dropping significantly! Good morning to all friends and happy last Sunday of September! This month has been particularly autumnal, characterized by as many as  eight disturbances  that have crossed our peninsula. Apart from these last few days, there have been no summer heat waves. O. , although until yesterday, in the southern regions, one could still enjoy some perfect days for going to the beach.   In fact, temperatures above  30°C  were recorded in many locations in  Apulia ,  Sicily , and  Sardinia , with values well above the seasonal average even in the central regions. However, starting today, the situation changes radically. A decidedly  cooler  and  unstable  phase is on its way, which will accompany us throughout the week. But now let’s see the forecast for today,  Sunday, Septemb...

Kilkenny beekeeper's honey sales support the world's poorest

Kilkenny beekeeper's honey sales support the world's poorest For almost 40 years, an award-winning Kilkenny beekeeper has donated the proceeds of his honey sales to charities including Christian Aid. Mervyn Rothwell’s  love of bees  began when he was just a boy, playing near his family home at Dungarvan in County Kilkenny. “Living in the country, you would hear the bees and I started collecting them in a container. That’s how I got into beekeeping,” he said. As a young man, Mervyn moved to Dublin where he worked as a financial controller for Cadbury’s chocolate company, but when his wife Hazel was diagnosed with MS in 1986, Mervyn took early retirement and the couple returned to The Rower in his native Kilkenny. It was then, alongside his caring responsibilities, that Mervyn’s hobby took off and he began selling his golden produce, first to the Boyne Valley honey company and later from home. “I was selling a fair bit of honey and I thought ‘what’s it all for?’ and that’...

Beekeeping Journey of Jagpal Singh Phogat: From Rs 1.5 Crore Turnover to Training Over 700 Farmers

Beekeeping Journey of Jagpal Singh Phogat: From Rs 1.5 Crore Turnover to Training Over 700 Farmers Jagpal Singh Phogat , a progressive farmer from Manikpur in UP’s Chitrakoot district, is tackling the pressing challenges faced by India’s agricultural sector. With farmers grappling with issues such as water scarcity, erratic weather patterns, and the detrimental effects of chemical fertilizers, which nearly 99% of farmers rely on, the agricultural landscape is under severe strain. These compounded factors have resulted in reduced crop yields, increased vulnerability to climate change, and a decline in environmental health. Despite the existence of government support schemes, Jagpal believes these measures have fallen short of addressing the widespread struggles of farmers. “The current situation of most of our farmers makes me feel bad. Our farmers must be wealthy,"  he emphasizes. Committed to transforming these challenges into opportunities, Jagpal is leading initiatives th...
