Akre beekeepers report record honey production, call for ban on imports
Beekeepers in Akre have reported a significant increase in honey production this year, with expectations that the yield may reach 37 tons. They are also calling for a ban on the import of foreign honey to support local producers.
Izzat Sulaiman, a beekeeper from Khardsay village in Akre district of Duhok province, maintains 300 beehives and is renowned as the "exemplary beekeeper" of the region.
Having started collecting honey recently, Sulaiman notes that this year’s production is higher than last year.
"Compared to last year, the production and quality of honey this year is much better," Sulaiman said. "Our only request to the government is to ban honey from regional countries so that we can sell our honey in the markets."
In recent years, beekeeping has become increasingly popular among farmers in Akre district.
Karwan Jamal, spokesperson for the Akre Agriculture Directorate, attributes this growth to multiple factors. "The support of the ninth cabinet for beekeeping, the climate of our region, and the expertise of the people have caused the number of beekeepers and honey production in Akre to increase annually," Jamal stated.
According to recorded data and statistics, over 584 beekeepers in Akre district collectively own more than 21,000 hives. This year’s honey production is projected to surpass 37,000 kilograms (37 tons).
The number of beekeepers in Akre district continues to rise each year, bolstered by the sustained support from the ninth cabinet for the agricultural and beekeeping sectors.
