Hive Mind: Award-Winning Student Startup Seeks to Learn the Language of Bees




In an innovative blend of tradition and technology, Mike Bronikowski, a senior at Binghamton University, is working to understand the language of honeybees. His startup, BuzzHive, aims to translate the buzzing of bees into actionable data to help beekeepers combat growing threats from climate change, pests, and other environmental changes. This groundbreaking initiative recently earned first place in the Software & Services category at the New York Business Plan Competition.

The Importance of Bees Honeybees play a crucial role in pollination, with the U.S. Department of Agriculture estimating that 35% of the human diet comes from insect-pollinated plants, and honeybees are responsible for 80% of that pollination. However, honeybee populations are under threat, with a recent study finding that 48% of U.S. honeybee colonies were lost between 2022 and 2023. This decline poses a significant risk to global food security and biodiversity.

BuzzHive’s Innovative Solution BuzzHive uses solar-powered sensors placed in beehives to collect data on temperature, humidity, weight, and audio. By employing machine learning and artificial intelligence, BuzzHive interprets the different types of buzzing bees make, providing beekeepers with insights to address hive issues such as excess moisture and mite infestations.

Transforming Beekeeping Practices “The premise of the technology is to translate bee language into human language,” explains Bronikowski. “It’s using technology to decompose signals from the beehive into actionable items that beekeepers can do to help their hives survive.” This innovative approach not only enhances hive management but also supports the sustainability of beekeeping amidst environmental challenges.

Support and Recognition Winning the New York Business Plan Competition provided BuzzHive with $10,000 in funding, which Bronikowski plans to use to develop the hardware and software further. His journey began with a deep-rooted family tradition of beekeeping, which he combined with his passion for physics and entrepreneurship. His dedication has been supported by the strong network at Binghamton University, including mentorship from faculty and collaboration with fellow students.

Looking Ahead As BuzzHive continues to develop, Bronikowski remains focused on the health and well-being of bees. “My concept with beekeeping is tradition,” he says. “I’ve never focused on scaling. My focus is, how can we make the bees happiest and enjoy them naturally so they can take care of themselves?”
